OUR APOSTULATES / MISSIONS

The Dominican friars in Nigeria and Ghana find their mission of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ through preaching and teaching in universities and the parish apostolates and serving the communities in health care, farming, counselling, and youth ministries. We strive to live out the Dominican charism of prayer, study, community, and ministry in our daily lives, and we are committed to promoting justice and peace in the world. We invite you to learn more about our history and the work we do to serve God's people.

Dominican Friars studentate 2023

The Order of Preachers or Dominicans was founded in 1216 by St. Dominic de Guzman. It is Roman Catholic Religious Order, whose charism is to preach and teach too combat heresies in the Church for the salvation of souls.  The province is part of an international religious family or Order spread to many countries making up provinces.

The Order came to Nigeria in 1951. The Order of Preachers (Dominican Friars) entity in Nigeria and Ghana
is known as the Province of St. Joseph the Worker. The Province comprises over 221 friars. Our friars engage in a variety of ministries, including serving as teachers, pastors, hospital chaplains, itinerant preachers, and campus ministers. Blessed with an abundance of vocations, we strive to live out our Dominican and Thomistic traditions as we face the challenges of modern-day West Africa.

The Order of Preachers is made up of regional provinces throughout the world that carry out the work of evangelization in collaboration with the bishops of the local churches where they serve.
